The Selling Point

Petco Dominates 100 Hottest Retailers List for 2014

Every year, the National Retail Federation publishes a list of tending retail stores in its Hot 100 list. Despite making the list five consecutive years, Petco was ranked in 93rd place last year. 2014 is looking much better with the pet store leaping up to the 47th spot this year.

Even though Petco made a surge in the market this year, PetSmart did not have the same fortune. After being ranked 41st last year with $6 million in sales worldwide, the company was unranked on this year’s Hot 100 list.

Petco saw an 8.5 percent growth in sales over the last year, raising sales from $3 billion to almost $3.3 billion. Petco’s CEO Jim Meyers attributes to the growth to the company’s focus on human and pet connection, “We’ve been focusing for the last several years on transforming our brand,” Meyers said in a statement about the ranking. “We are going beyond just selling products and services to really connecting emotionally with our customers and their pets.”
